Sir Oliver Lodge (1851–1940) was a British physicist and writer. Professor at University College, Liverpool, and later the first principal of the University of Birmingham, he made important contributions to the study of electromagnetic waves and wireless telegraphy, including improvements in radio reception, and to the development of the spark plug. He was also a leading member of the Society for Psychical Research, and after his son Raymond was killed in the First World War he published Raymond, or Life and Death, describing messages he believed came from him through mediums. He wrote widely on science and religion.
