Pygmalion
Pygmalion is George Bernard Shaw's comedy about speech and class, first performed in 1913. Henry Higgins, a professor of phonetics, bets his friend Colonel Pickering that in six months he can pass off Eliza Doolittle, a Covent Garden flower seller, as a duchess by teaching her to talk properly. He wins the bet and never considers what is to become of her afterward. Eliza's dustman father, who turns up to be bought off and ends up a victim of middle-class morality, is one of Shaw's best creations. The play was later turned into the musical My Fair Lady, whose happy ending Shaw would have detested; his own prose epilogue explains why Eliza does not marry Higgins.
