Pistis Sophia
Pistis Sophia is a Gnostic scripture of the third or fourth century preserved in a single Coptic manuscript, the Askew Codex, now in the British Museum. In it the risen Jesus, eleven years after the resurrection, instructs his disciples on the Mount of Olives about the realms of light and darkness, the fall and repentance of the aeon Sophia, whose thirteen hymns of repentance are matched with the Psalms, and the mysteries that free the soul. This volume, published in 1924, gives George Horner's literal translation from the Coptic, the first made directly into English, with an introduction by F. Legge on the manuscript, its five documents, their authorship and date, and the work's place in Gnosticism. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
