One Hundred Merrie and Delightsome Stories is Robert B. Douglas's 1899 translation of the Cent Nouvelles Nouvelles, a collection of French tales compiled at the Burgundian court of Philip the Good around 1460 and dedicated to his son. The stories, attributed to various courtiers and traditionally edited by Antoine de la Sale, are in the tradition of Boccaccio and the fabliaux: brisk, bawdy anecdotes of cuckolded husbands, lecherous monks, clever wives, foolish peasants and ingenious lovers, set in the towns and villages of France, Flanders and Burgundy. A few are sentimental or tragic. Douglas provides an introduction on the collection's origins and notes on its sources, and his version was the first complete one in English. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first story is free.
