On the magnet, magnetick bodies also, and on the great magnet the earth
a new physiology, demonstrated by many arguments & experiments
On the Magnet, published in Latin in 1600 as De Magnete, is the work of William Gilbert of Colchester, physician to Queen Elizabeth I, and one of the founding books of experimental science. Gilbert rejects the guesses of earlier philosophers and reports experiments: he distinguishes the attraction of the loadstone from the pull of rubbed amber, coining the term for electric bodies, studies poles, magnetization and the behavior of iron, and uses a small spherical loadstone, his terrella, to show how a compass needle points and dips. From these he argues that the Earth itself is a great magnet. This is the English translation by Silvanus P. Thompson, printed at the Chiswick Press in 1900.
