Norse mythology; or, The religion of our forefathers, containing all the myths of the Eddas, systematized and interpreted

by Rasmus Björn Anderson

About 8 h 04 min of reading85 chapters

Norse Mythology, first published in 1875 by Rasmus B. Anderson, professor of Scandinavian languages at the University of Wisconsin, was one of the first systematic accounts of the subject written for American readers, and it is dedicated to Longfellow. Introductory chapters ask what mythology is, compare the Norse myths with those of Greece and Rome, suggest how they may be interpreted and describe their sources in the Elder and Younger Eddas. The main body retells the myths in order: the creation and preservation of the world; the lives and deeds of the gods, Odin, Thor, Frey, Balder and Loki among them; and Ragnarok, the destruction of the world, followed by its renewal. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
