Modern Greek Folklore and Ancient Greek Religion, published in 1910, is J. C. Lawson's study of what survived of the pagan past in the beliefs of Greek villagers at the start of the twentieth century. Drawing on two years of travel and conversation, he describes the nereids, Charon as the figure of death, the Fates, the Lamia and the Gorgon, the Callicantzari who roam at Christmas, and the dreaded vrykolakas or vampire, and argues that each descends, through centuries of nominal Christianity, from ancient Greek religion. A second part treats the customs surrounding birth, marriage and death and the ideas of the soul they imply. Lawson writes with respect for his informants, and the book is still valued by folklorists and classicists. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
