John Cuthbert Lawson (1874–1919) was an English classical scholar and a fellow of Pembroke College, Cambridge. As a Craven student he spent two years traveling in Greece, talking with villagers about their beliefs and customs, and the result was Modern Greek Folklore and Ancient Greek Religion, published in 1910, which argued that the nereids, vampires and other figures of peasant tradition descended directly from the religion of antiquity. During the First World War he served as a naval intelligence officer in Crete and wrote Tales of Aegean Intrigue about the experience. He died shortly after the war.
