Malay Magic

by Walter William Skeat

Being an introduction to the folklore and popular religion of the Malay Peninsula

About 15 h 40 min of reading373 chapters

Malay Magic, published in 1900, is Walter William Skeat's record of the folklore and popular religion of the Malay Peninsula, compiled during his years in the civil service of Selangor. Beneath the official Islam of the Malays he found an older world of spirits, charms and ceremonies, and he set it down in order: ideas of the creation of the world and of man, the soul and its wanderings, the magician and his rites, the gods and demons of air, earth, water and forest, charms for weather, hunting, fishing, planting rice and building houses, the rituals of birth, marriage and death, divination, and the black art. A long appendix gives the Malay texts of the charms. It remains a primary source. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
