La Chanson de Roland : Translated from the Seventh Edition of Léon Gautier
The Song of Roland, composed in Old French around the end of the eleventh century, tells how Charlemagne's rear guard, betrayed by the knight Ganelon, is ambushed in the Pyrenees, and how Roland, Oliver and Archbishop Turpin face the Saracen army. This English version was made by Léonce Rabillon, a French lecturer at Johns Hopkins University, and published in 1885 with the encouragement of Longfellow. It follows as literally as possible the text of the Oxford manuscript as revised by the French scholar Léon Gautier, stanza by stanza, and is preceded by short notes on the history of the poem and its manuscripts. The result keeps close to the hard, repetitive grandeur of the original. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
