The Kalevala is the national epic of Finland, assembled by the physician Elias Lönnrot from folk songs he collected among rural singers and published in its final form in 1849. In fifty runes it tells of the creation of the world from a duck's egg, of the old singer Väinämöinen, the smith Ilmarinen who forges the magic Sampo, and the reckless Lemminkäinen, of their wooing of the maiden of Pohjola in the far north, of the tragic Kullervo, and of the theft and loss of the Sampo. John Martin Crawford's translation of 1888 was the first complete English version and keeps the trochaic meter that Longfellow borrowed for Hiawatha. The poem is a storehouse of Finnish myth. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first rune is free.
