In Jeopardy, published in 1922, is a mystery set on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Hugh Hildebrand, a New Yorker, is summoned to the funeral of a distant cousin and learns that he has inherited Hildebrand Hundred, an old plantation house with a family history of sudden deaths. The previous owners all died in the same room, a code of numbers found in the house seems to point to something hidden, and a cipher the narrator calls the indecipherable one must be broken before the next death. Van Tassel Sutphen mixes the inheritance plot with a love story and a midsummer ball, and the Chesapeake country of tobacco fields, creeks and decayed gentility is drawn with affection. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
