William Gilbert Van Tassel Sutphen (1861–1945) was an American novelist and editor. A graduate of Princeton, he worked for many years at Harper & Brothers in New York and wrote fiction in several genres: comic stories of golf, then a new craze, collected in The Golficide and The Nineteenth Hole; The Doomsman (1906), an early novel of a future New York reverted to barbarism; and mysteries such as In Jeopardy (1922) and The Gates of Chance. He also edited an anthology of golf literature. His work is characteristic of the educated, genial popular fiction of the Harper's magazines of his day.
