The Return of Sherlock Holmes

by Arthur Conan Doyle

About 7 h 30 min of reading13 chapters

The Return of Sherlock Holmes collects thirteen stories published in the Strand from 1903 to 1904, after Doyle agreed to revive the detective he had sent over the Reichenbach Falls a decade earlier. The Empty House explains how Holmes survived and sets a trap for Moriarty's lieutenant, Colonel Moran. The rest include The Dancing Men, a cipher story; The Six Napoleons; The Priory School; The Second Stain, a matter of state; and Charles Augustus Milverton, in which Holmes and Watson commit burglary to stop a blackmailer. Collected in 1905, these stories find Doyle fully back in command of the form, and several of them are among the most frequently anthologized of all the Holmes tales. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
