The Lost World
Edward Malone, a young Irish journalist, needs an adventure to impress the woman he loves, and finds one in Professor Challenger, a bearded, violent and brilliant zoologist who claims to have seen living dinosaurs on a plateau in the Amazon. With Challenger's skeptical rival Summerlee and the sportsman Lord John Roxton, Malone climbs onto the plateau and finds pterodactyls, iguanodons, a tribe of ape-men and no obvious way down. Arthur Conan Doyle published the novel in 1912, and it founded a genre; the final scene at the Queen's Hall in London, where Challenger produces his proof, is one of his best. Challenger returned in four later stories. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
