His Last Bow
Some Reminiscences of Sherlock Holmes
His Last Bow collects seven Sherlock Holmes stories first published in magazines between 1908 and 1917, including the two-part Wisteria Lodge, The Bruce-Partington Plans, in which stolen submarine blueprints bring Mycroft Holmes to Baker Street, The Dying Detective, The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax and The Devil's Foot, set during a Cornish holiday. The title story departs from the formula: it is told in the third person and shows an aging Holmes working against a German spy on the eve of the First World War. Published as a book in 1917, with a preface noting that Holmes has retired to keep bees on the Sussex Downs, the collection has a darker, more valedictory tone than the earlier volumes. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil; the first chapter is free.
