The Hound of the Baskervilles
Dr. Mortimer comes to Baker Street with an old manuscript and a new death. The manuscript tells of a spectral hound that has haunted the Baskerville family since a wicked ancestor's crime; the death is that of Sir Charles Baskerville, found on the moor near his house with a look of terror on his face and the prints of a gigantic hound nearby. Holmes sends Watson to Dartmoor with the heir, Sir Henry, and for much of the novel Watson investigates alone, among escaped convicts, lonely farmhouses and the Grimpen Mire. Serialized in 1901 and 1902, after Doyle had apparently killed Holmes off, the novel brought the detective back to enormous public demand, and it is the most atmospheric of the Holmes stories. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
