The White Company, published in 1891, was the historical novel Arthur Conan Doyle hoped would be remembered when Sherlock Holmes was forgotten. In 1366 Alleyne Edricson, raised in Beaulieu Abbey, goes out into the world and falls in with the giant Hordle John and the veteran archer Samkin Aylward, who are joining the free company of English bowmen in France under the small, half-blind and wholly fearless knight Sir Nigel Loring. The road leads through Hampshire and across the Bay of Biscay to Bordeaux, the court of the Black Prince, tournaments, a besieged castle in Brittany, the passage of Roncesvalles and the Spanish campaign, with Alleyne's love for Sir Nigel's daughter running beneath the adventures. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
