The Extraordinary Adventures of Arsène Lupin, Gentleman-Burglar
These nine stories introduce Arsène Lupin, the gentleman burglar who robs the rich with elegance, leaves calling cards, and is usually several steps ahead of the police inspector Ganimard. The opening tale has him arrested on a transatlantic liner, and the sequence follows his imprisonment, his escape and a series of thefts including a queen's necklace and a black pearl. The final story pits him against an English detective named Herlock Sholmes, a thinly veiled parody adopted after Conan Doyle objected to the use of the real name. Maurice Leblanc published the stories in the magazine Je sais tout from 1905 and collected them in 1907; Lupin became France's answer to Sherlock Holmes. This edition is George Morehead's translation. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
