The Man Who Was Thursday

by G. K. Chesterton

A Nightmare

About 3 h 52 min of reading15 chapters

Gabriel Syme, a poet recruited by a secret anti-anarchist branch of Scotland Yard, infiltrates the Central Anarchist Council, whose seven members are named after the days of the week. Elected as Thursday, he finds himself attending a breakfast on a London balcony with the terrifying President, Sunday, and plotting to prevent a bombing in Paris. As the chase unfolds, through London, by cab, by motorcar and on an elephant, each conspirator turns out to be other than he seems, and the book moves from spy thriller to something closer to theology. Chesterton published it in 1908 with the subtitle A Nightmare, and insisted it should be read as such. It is short, fast and full of the paradoxes that made him famous.
