The Club of Queer Trades

by G. K. Chesterton

About 2 h 57 min of reading6 chapters

The Club of Queer Trades, published in 1905, collects six linked comic mysteries by G. K. Chesterton. Its members are admitted only if they have invented an entirely new way of earning a living, and each story turns on one such profession, whose discovery explains a run of apparently sinister events. The cases are brought to light by Basil Grant, a former judge who left the bench in what his colleagues took for madness and now lives as a mystic in a Lambeth garret, assisted by his brother Rupert, an eager amateur detective whose theories are always wrong. Chesterton uses the detective story to celebrate the strangeness hidden in ordinary London. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first story is free.
