G. K. Chesterton (1874–1936) was an English writer whose output ran to around a hundred books of essays, journalism, fiction, poetry, biography and Christian apologetics. Born in London and trained as an artist, he became a newspaper columnist and one of the most quoted public figures of his day, known for his bulk, his cape and his love of paradox. His fiction includes the Father Brown detective stories, beginning with The Innocence of Father Brown, and the novel The Man Who Was Thursday; among his nonfiction, Orthodoxy is still read. He converted to Catholicism in 1922 and debated publicly with Bernard Shaw and H. G. Wells, who remained his friends.
