The New Jerusalem

by G. K. Chesterton

About 6 h 13 min of reading16 chapters

The New Jerusalem, published in 1920, is G. K. Chesterton's account of a journey through Egypt to Palestine shortly after the First World War, written up from notes first printed in a newspaper. Chesterton describes the way across the desert, the gates and streets of Jerusalem and the mix of peoples and faiths he found there, and uses what he sees to reflect on sightseeing, on the meaning of the Crusades, on the fall of chivalry and on the relations of East and West. The book is full of his paradoxes and his Catholic sympathies. Its final chapter, on Zionism, also expresses views about Jews that reflect the prejudices of its author and period. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
