Orthodoxy

by G. K. Chesterton

About 4 h 16 min of reading11 chapters

Orthodoxy, published in 1908, is G. K. Chesterton's account of how he came to believe in Christianity, written in answer to critics who said his previous book, Heretics, had attacked everyone else's creed without stating his own. Rather than argue from doctrine, he tells the story of a man who set out to discover a new country and found he had landed in England: his own attempts to think out a philosophy of wonder, limit, free will and gratitude led him, he says, to positions the Church had held all along. Chapters such as "The Maniac," "The Ethics of Elfland" and "The Paradoxes of Christianity" are among his most quoted. The method is paradox, the tone is cheerful. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
