The Innocence of Father Brown

by G. K. Chesterton

About 5 h 17 min of reading12 chapters

Father Brown is a small, shabby Roman Catholic priest with an umbrella and an unexpected understanding of crime, acquired, he explains, from hearing confessions. In these twelve stories he solves murders and thefts not by examining clues but by understanding the people involved, often reaching a conclusion that seems absurd until he explains it. The first story, The Blue Cross, introduces his friend and foil, the master thief Flambeau; others, including The Secret Garden, The Queer Feet, The Hammer of God and The Sign of the Broken Sword, turn on a paradox or a reversal of expectation. Chesterton published the collection in 1911 and went on to write four more. The stories are short, witty and more interested in motive than in method.
