The Napoleon of Notting Hill

by G. K. Chesterton

About 3 h 41 min of reading21 chapters

The Napoleon of Notting Hill, published in 1904, was G. K. Chesterton's first novel. It is set in a London of 1984 where nothing has changed except that democracy has died and the king is chosen by lot. The lot falls on Auberon Quin, a joker, who for his amusement orders every borough to revive its medieval dignity with walls, banners and halberdiers. Everyone treats it as a farce except Adam Wayne, provost of Notting Hill, who takes the charter in earnest and goes to war to defend Pump Street against a road scheme. The joke becomes a battle and the battle a legend. Chesterton's defense of the small and local against the great and sensible is at its most exuberant.
