The Secret of Father Brown
Flambeau, once the most famous thief in France and later a private detective, has retired to a castle in Spain, and Father Brown comes to visit. An American guest asks the little priest how he solves his cases, and the answer, that he puts himself inside the murderer until he knows how it was done, frames the eight stories that follow, among them The Mirror of the Magistrate, The Man with Two Beards, The Worst Crime in the World and The Chief Mourner of Marne, before a closing chapter reveals Flambeau's own secret. G. K. Chesterton published this fourth Father Brown collection in 1927, and it is the one in which he comes nearest to explaining his detective. The stories are available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first one is free.
