French Fairy Tales is a collection of thirty-four folk tales from the French provinces translated by Martha Ward Carey and published in New York in 1887, here in the illustrated edition of 1903 with drawings by E. Boyd Smith. These are not Perrault's court tales but stories taken down from peasant tellers, among them The Legend of the Lake of Issarles, The Fairies and the Two Hunchbacks, John Bit-of-a-Man, The Nine Brothers Who Were Changed to Sheep and Their Sister, The Castle Hung in the Air, The Siren of La Fresnaye and the Breton tales of Fanch Scouarnec and The Princess of Tronkolaine. An introductory note explains the interest such stories had acquired for scholars since the Grimms. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first story is free.
