Forest Days, published in 1843, is G. P. R. James's Robin Hood novel, and in his dedication he explains his one deliberate liberty: he moves the outlaw from the reign of Richard I, where ballad and tradition had placed him, to the reign of Henry III, as an English yeoman outlawed for his support of the popular party in the struggle between the king and Simon de Montfort. Around Robin and his men James sets a love story between a young knight and a lady of the barons' faction, a villainous kinsman, a tournament, a siege and the campaign that ends at Evesham in 1265.
