Folk-Lore of West and Mid-Wales
Folk-Lore of West and Mid-Wales, published at Aberystwyth in 1911, is the work of Jonathan Ceredig Davies, a Welsh writer who had traveled widely and returned to record the beliefs of his native Cardiganshire and the neighboring counties. Much of it was collected from conversation with country people. He describes divination by candle and pin, tea cups and the Bible and key, wedding customs, wakes and funerals, the festivals of the year from Christmas and New Year to St. Valentine's Day, witches and wizards, charms and cures, ghosts, death omens and corpse candles, and a wealth of stories about the fairies, their markets, changelings, money and tricks. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
