Ecclesiastical History of England, Volume 3—The Church of the Restoration [part 1]
John Stoughton, a Congregational minister and historian, wrote a multi-volume Ecclesiastical History of England from the Long Parliament onward, and this is the first of two volumes on the Church of the Restoration, published in 1870. It begins with the return of Charles II in 1660 and follows the reestablishment of the Church of England: the restored bishops, the failed attempts at compromise with the Presbyterians, the Act of Uniformity of 1662 and the ejection of nonconforming ministers, and the laws that followed against dissent. Stoughton writes as a Nonconformist, yet he aims at fairness to all parties and quotes contemporary documents and memoirs at length. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
