John Stoughton (1807–1897) was an English Congregationalist minister and church historian. Born in Norwich, he trained for the law before entering the ministry, served for some thirty years at Kensington Chapel in London, and later taught historical theology at New College. His principal work, a many-volume Ecclesiastical History of England from the Long Parliament onward, set out to treat Anglicans and Dissenters with equal fairness, and he continued it in Religion in England under Queen Anne and the Georges. He also wrote on the Pilgrim Fathers, William Penn and the Spanish reformers, and was respected across denominational lines.
