Moncure Daniel Conway was a Virginia-born minister who moved from Methodism to Unitarianism to freethought, became an abolitionist, and spent most of his later life as the preacher of South Place Chapel in London. Demonology and Devil-Lore, published in two volumes in 1879 and complete here, is his survey of the dark side of religion: how the demons of fear, hunger, cold, disease, darkness and death arose in the imagination of early peoples, how dragons, serpents and ogres took shape in myth, and how the Devil of Christian theology grew out of these ancestors and out of rival gods degraded by their conquerors.
