Moncure Daniel Conway (1832–1907) was an American clergyman, abolitionist and freethinker, born into a slaveholding family in Virginia. He became a Methodist preacher, then a Unitarian minister after study at Harvard Divinity School, and his anti-slavery sermons cost him his pulpit in Washington. He went to England in 1863 to argue the Union cause and stayed for most of his life as minister of South Place Chapel in London, which under him moved from Unitarianism to free religious humanism. His many books include a two-volume life of Thomas Paine, Demonology and Devil-Lore, and an autobiography. He died in Paris.
