Buddhist birth stories; or, Jataka tales, Volume 1
The Jataka tales tell of the former lives of the Buddha, in which the future teacher appears as a merchant, a king, an animal or a sage. This first volume, published in 1880, is T. W. Rhys Davids' English translation from the Pali text edited by V. Fausbøll. It opens with a long introduction tracing how these stories traveled west in the Kalilag and Damnag literature and in the legend of Barlaam and Josaphat. Next comes the Nidanakatha, the traditional account of the Buddha's life, and then the first of the birth stories themselves, among them The Sandy Road and The Merchant of Seri, each framed by the occasion on which the Buddha told it. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
