Athelstane Ford
Athelstane Ford, published in 1899, is an adventure novel told by a young man who leaves his father's house near Yarmouth, on the Norfolk broads, to seek his fortune in the East Indies, drawn away by his dashing cousin Rupert. The voyage brings him into the wars of the East India Company in the 1750s, from the siege of the pirate stronghold of Gheriah to captivity, the Black Hole of Calcutta and the campaign that ended at Plassey under Robert Clive. Along the way the narrator learns the cost of jealousy and divided loyalty, as the cousin he trusted turns into a dangerous rival. Allen Upward tells the story in a brisk, old-fashioned first-person voice. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
