Anecdotes of Dogs

About 8 h 24 min of reading52 chapters

Anecdotes of Dogs, first published in 1846 and here given in the enlarged edition of 1858, is Edward Jesse's collection of stories about the fidelity, intelligence and courage of dogs, arranged breed by breed. The Irish wolf-dog, Newfoundland, shepherd's dog, St. Bernard, bloodhound, terrier, spaniel, poodle, greyhound, pointer, setter, pug, turnspit, foxhound, beagle, mastiff, bulldog, Dalmatian and others each receive a chapter mixing natural history with tales sent by friends or taken from earlier writers, among them Lady Morgan and Mrs. S. C. Hall on the wolf-dog. A closing section covers feeding and management. Jesse, a naturalist and courtier who wrote widely on country life, hoped that knowing the dog's character better would lead to its kinder treatment. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
