The Vishnu Purana is one of the major Puranas, the Sanskrit compendiums of myth, cosmology and sacred history that shaped popular Hinduism. Framed as the teaching of the sage Parasara to his disciple Maitreya, it moves through six books from the creation of the universe and the nature of Vishnu as supreme being to the shape of the world and its regions, the ages of time, the duties of the castes and stages of life, the genealogies of royal dynasties, the life of Krishna, and the dissolution of all things. This prose version was edited by Manmatha Nath Dutt in Calcutta in 1896 for general readers, drawing principally on the earlier translation by H. H. Wilson. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
