A Description of the Coasts of East Africa and Malabar in the Beginning of the Sixteenth Century

This description of the shores of the Indian Ocean around 1514 is usually attributed to Duarte Barbosa, a Portuguese official who served for years on the Malabar coast of India, though the manuscripts do not give his name. Henry E. J. Stanley translated it for the Hakluyt Society from an early Spanish manuscript in Barcelona, with notes and a preface. Moving eastward from the Cape of Good Hope, the author describes Sofala, Mozambique, Kilwa, Mombasa, Malindi and the other trading towns of East Africa, the Red Sea, Arabia and Persia, and then the ports and kingdoms of western India, with sharp observations of trade, customs, dress, religion and government at the moment the Portuguese arrived.
