Wuthering Heights

by Emily Brontë

About 7 h 46 min of reading34 chapters

A new tenant on the Yorkshire moors, Mr. Lockwood, visits his landlord at the farmhouse called Wuthering Heights and finds a household of hatred: the surly Heathcliff, a young widow who will not speak to him, and a rough youth who may or may not be a servant. From his housekeeper Nelly Dean he hears how it came about, beginning with a foundling brought home from Liverpool and the wild girl, Catherine Earnshaw, who grew up with him. Their attachment survives her marriage to the gentle Edgar Linton and outlasts her death, and Heathcliff's revenge on both families takes a generation to play out. Emily Brontë published it in 1847 under the name Ellis Bell; it was her only novel. Read it online in your browser on Vinteuil; the first chapter is free.
