Dracula

by Bram Stoker

About 10 h 45 min of reading29 chapters

Jonathan Harker, a young English solicitor, travels to Transylvania to settle a property purchase for a nobleman named Count Dracula, and slowly realizes that his host is not what he seems. The Count then sails for England, and the novel becomes a hunt as Harker, his wife Mina, Dr. Seward, the Dutch professor Van Helsing and others try to track down a creature who leaves little trace. Stoker tells the story entirely through documents: diaries, letters, newspaper clippings, a ship's log and phonograph recordings, so that no character ever has the full picture. Published in 1897, Dracula fixed the modern image of the vampire, and its anxieties about science, sexuality and foreignness have kept critics busy ever since. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
