Bram Stoker (1847–1912) was an Irish novelist, born in Dublin, where a childhood illness kept him bedridden until the age of seven. He worked as a civil servant and theatre critic before becoming business manager of the Lyceum Theatre in London for the actor Henry Irving, a post he held for nearly thirty years. Stoker wrote in his spare time, and of his dozen novels only Dracula, published in 1897, is widely read today; the others include The Jewel of Seven Stars. Dracula was a modest success in his lifetime and only became a phenomenon through stage and film adaptations after his death.
