Little Women

by Louisa May Alcott

About 12 h 26 min of reading49 chapters

Little Women follows the four March sisters, Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy, through a year of genteel poverty in a New England town while their father serves as a chaplain in the Civil War, and then, in the second part, into adulthood, marriage and loss. Jo, the tomboy who wants to write, is the center of the book and a portrait of Alcott herself. First published in two parts in 1868 and 1869, the novel was an immediate success and has never been out of print. Its chapters are mostly small domestic episodes, a play, a quarrel, a ruined dinner, but they add up to an unusually frank account of girls learning what they want and what they must give up. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
