Jo's Boys

by Louisa May Alcott

About 6 h 43 min of reading23 chapters

Jo's Boys, published in 1886, is the last of Louisa May Alcott's books about the March family. Ten years after Little Men, the school at Plumfield has grown into a college, Jo is a famous author pursued by admirers, and the boys she once raised are becoming men. The novel follows each of them into the world: Dan, the restless one, goes west; Nat studies music in Germany; Emil goes to sea; Demi looks for his calling; while Nan pursues medicine and Josie dreams of the stage. Alcott mixes adventure, romance and loss with her familiar warmth and her arguments for women's education, and takes leave of her characters in a final chapter addressed to readers. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
