Moods
Sylvia Yule is seventeen, impulsive and governed by her moods, and two men love her: Adam Warwick, a restless, dominating idealist, and his gentler friend Geoffrey Moor. A boating trip up a river, a storm and a night in a barn bring the three of them together, and a misunderstanding about Warwick's engagement leads Sylvia to marry the wrong man. Louisa May Alcott published this, her first novel, in 1864, four years before Little Women, and she considered it her real work; Henry James reviewed it, unkindly. It is a serious book about marriage without love, written under the influence of Emerson and the Concord circle, with a heroine who is allowed to be difficult. This is the text of the first edition. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
