Rose in Bloom
A Sequel to "Eight Cousins"
Rose in Bloom, published in 1876, is Louisa May Alcott's sequel to Eight Cousins. Rose Campbell comes home from two years of travel in Europe with her guardian, Uncle Alec, a young woman of twenty and an heiress, determined to make good use of her fortune and her freedom. Her seven boy cousins have grown up too, among them the charming, idle Charlie and the bookish Mac, compete for her regard, while her friend Phebe, once a servant girl, pursues a career as a singer. Through parties, temptations, a sad loss and new resolutions, Rose learns what she wants from life. Alcott insists in her preface that the story has no moral, but it is full of warmth and good sense.
