The Mysteries of Udolpho

About 19 h 26 min of reading57 chapters

Emily St. Aubert, orphaned in the Gascony of the 1580s, is placed in the care of a worldly aunt who marries the Italian nobleman Montoni and carries Emily off to his castle of Udolpho in the Apennines. There, behind locked doors and a black veil, Emily meets strange noises, a vanished chatelaine and a guardian who means to marry her off for her property. Ann Radcliffe published the novel in 1794 and received an unprecedented sum for it; it became the model for the Gothic romance and the direct target of Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey. Radcliffe's method is to raise terror and then explain it, and the book spends as much time on landscape and poetry as on its villain.
