Pride and Prejudice
Pride and Prejudice follows the five Bennet sisters, whose mother is anxious to see them married before their father's estate passes to a cousin. When the wealthy Mr. Bingley rents a nearby house and brings his friend Mr. Darcy, Elizabeth Bennet, the second and sharpest of the sisters, takes an instant dislike to Darcy's reserve, and the novel traces how both of them come to revise their first judgments. Austen published it in 1813, having drafted an early version in the 1790s. It is the most comic of her novels, with a gallery of fools, Mr. Collins, Lady Catherine, Mrs. Bennet, set against the dry intelligence of Elizabeth and her father, and its dialogue has been quoted and adapted for two centuries.
