Sense and Sensibility

About 7 h 58 min of reading50 chapters

When Mr. Dashwood dies, his estate passes to his son by a first marriage, and his widow and three daughters must leave Norland for a cottage in Devonshire on a much reduced income. Elinor, the eldest, is reserved and sensible; Marianne, the second, is passionate and open about everything she feels. Each falls in love, Elinor with the quiet Edward Ferrars, who turns out to be secretly engaged, and Marianne with the dashing Willoughby, who turns out to be worse. The steady Colonel Brandon waits. Austen's first published novel, issued anonymously in 1811, is sharper and sadder than its reputation as a comedy of manners suggests, with a close eye on money, inheritance and the gossip of small circles.
