Persuasion is Jane Austen's last completed novel, published in 1817, a few months after her death. Eight years before the story opens, Anne Elliot was persuaded by a family friend to break her engagement to a young naval officer with no fortune. Now she is twenty-seven, overlooked by her vain father and sisters, and Captain Wentworth has come home from the wars rich, successful and apparently indifferent to her. The novel follows them through the autumn countryside, the seaside at Lyme and the drawing rooms of Bath. It is quieter and sadder than Austen's earlier books, and Wentworth's letter near the end is often called the finest thing she wrote.
